The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock

Here’s the text of the poem. Read it and then look at the following interpretations and uses of T.S. Eliot’s work.

Straight Prufrock-No Chaser, No Sweetening

Prufrock with Music

The Wasteland
This is from Apocalypse Now.
Notice how Kurtz is mining Eliot’s Modernism for themes that relate to the film, and the character.

If Not, Not
The Painter said that this painting was inspired by “The Wasteland.”

Uhh yeah… I almost thought your email about this was spam and deleted it.

Luckily, I decided to open it…

By the way, I didn’t like the first Prufrock reading.

He skipped stuff and it confused me! I had to figure out where in the world he skipped to.

I can’t see anything except that weird picture with the books on the ground. I don’t really like that picture either

I noticed the skipping in the first reading too! I was confused at first, but then I just stopped reading it and listened to the rest of that interpretation.

There’s something dark in both of the readings. It’s kind of intriguing but a little bit creepy too.

I agree with Cecilia about the Prufrock reading, I tried to follow along to the reading, but he skips so much I got confused.

Also, I really like the painting.

ACK, finally, managed to login and comment. How annoying.

For some reason, email doesn’t work too well for me between the house and most people, so I’ve posted the name of my edublog/learnerblog here in case my email doesn’t go through.

    …er, see you in school, I suppose…

So I finally got on… viewed the videos [or most of them, anyway :P ]… the readings were alright– the one with the music was kind of lame [the music became quite annoying and distracting after a while]…

  •   Steph // Jan 24th 2008 at 6:56 pm

The reading of the poem with the music is weird because, having watched the beginning of Apocalypse Now, it connects you to the images of that war and of the book Heart of Darkness.

I agree with everyone else about the Prufrock reading, I tried to follow along and understand the reading, but it began to get pretty confusing but i like the interpretation and painting posted. : )

William Dafoe reading from the 4 quartets is creepy. There’s also a sheep/lamb/animal thing in the middle of the painting

  •   Rachel // Jan 25th 2008 at 7:17 pm

Though the first Prufrock reading jumps around, I like it better than the one with music (mostly because I get distracted by the music after about 12 seconds.)

The painting inspired by The Wasteland is a little abstract for me. I read that the building in the top left corner is the gatehouse to Auschwitz. This reminded me of the concentration camp (Dachau) I visited in Germany the summer before last. This thought is kind of off topic… oh well.

I really enjoyed the straight reading, he has the “Sherlock Holmes” voice.
The art is a bit flat,
but I can see how it fits…
    I guess.
    :b

I agree with most of the people. the reading is a little creepy but i actually like the music, it ads visuals into the reading; for me atleast. :P but my blog is

Hey, just wanted to let you know that I got my blog going. I’m still working on it though. I suck at anything that has to do with computers which is why this took me so long!
By the way… I kind of hate you for this.
    Just kidding!

    Blog 2

Should books influence the way people think?

I think that books should influence people. I think that books should influence people in a positive way. For example you read a book to find out who you are and a book may help you to do that. Reading books are supposed to make us think about things and cause us to analyze ourselves. In order to do this I think that the book would need to influence the reader a little bit in order for us to see who we really are. In some cases this can cause people to do bad things when they have a different mind set and they read a book. When people do bad things based on books it really shows the effect that books can have on a person of which can be good or bad depending on the person.
